Rob Varley

When faced with photographing the chief executive of the Met office Rob Varley, how better to illustrate his job than an outdoor shoot in central London on a late November day. Grey, dreary rain in typical UK fashion was apparent so to brighten it all I brought along a cheerful umbrella, used once before on my shoot with Glastonbury festival organiser Michael Eavis (on an ironic sunny day) at his farm.
Rob was a great sport, approaching the shoot with a wry smile, even when I asked him to release the umbrella.  In hindsight I perhaps should have checked the wind direction so as to be sure not to decapitate any unsuspecting ducks, though I was lucky this time so could end the shoot with a clear conscience.
