Hauptstadtwinzer Vineyard

Nestled in a quiet street of Berlins bustling hipster Kreuzberg district, is a rather surprising discovery- Hauptstadtwinzer vineyard.

Walking amidst the developing lush vines in early morning sunshine, you could be forgiven for thinking you might be strolling the hills of Provence until looming graffiti sprayed buildings come into sight and the wail of a distant siren re announces the urban setting.

The site is owned by the council and run by a small group of volunteers with jovial wine-making experts Timo and Daniel at the helm. The production rate is slow- pretty much one bottle of wine a year- but you can tell it’s about more than quantity of produce for these guys. It’s a real passion for them- an opportunity to curate, craft and lovingly cultivate a condensed world within a vast city.
